Bi-Mart's first membership discount store opened in Yakima, WA in 1955. In 1976, it was bought by Pay 'n Save, and in 1984, Bi-Mart's corporate parent were bought by Thrifty Corporation. Thrifty Corporation merged with Kmart's subsidary PayLess Drug and created Thrifty PayLess which at the time converted all Pay 'n Save drug stores into PayLess stores. Thrifty PayLess was acquired by Rite Aid. In 1997, Bi-Mart's senior management and a Portland-based venture capital firm bought the company from Rite Aid and they sold it to its employees in March 2004. A typical membership costs $5.00.
